Third Try A Charm

Grand Final

Team St. Lucia USA 1 Team Grenada USA 1 (Team St. Lucia 5-4 in Kicks from the Penalty Mark - Sudden Death)

Team St. Lucia USA is first time New York Caribbean Cup champions by defeating Team Grenada USA 5-4 in sudden death penalty shootout at Thomas Jefferson High School Sports Complex this afternoon.

Before the largest crowd this season underdogs St. Lucia got the go ahead goal on a Melvin Monrose volley shot twenty-five minutes into the opening stanza. Grenada’s goalkeeper Ken Searles did well to get his hand on the ball only to see it spin off his finger tips and into the goal.

As half time approached you could see that Grenada was desperate for the equalizer and in fact came close twice only to see the ball swatted away by Chad Phillip who had an outstanding game in goal.

Monrose continued to be a thorn in the side of Grenada into the second half and very early in the half Ricky Morris was cautioned for bringing Monrose down in what some might call ‘a professional foul’.

With St. Lucia hanging on to their one goal advantage, Kyle Joseph brought the ‘spice’ massive to life with a magnificent individual effort. He dribbled down the right side, shed his marker by turning on him, shot with his left foot and beat Chad Phillip to his right, score tied St. Lucia 1 Grenada 1. There was no further scoring in the match as the game went into PSO.

After the first five penalty kicks by each team, the score was knotted at 3-3. Both teams scored their first sudden death shots to leave the scores at 4-4. In the second round of sudden death PSO, Melvin Monrose scored for St. Lucia while the Lucian goalkeeper Chad Phillip saved the Grenada attempt on goal. The joy of winning, and winning their first championship was something to behold as some players rolled on the ground with joy.

3rd and 4th Place Playoff

Team Jamaica USA 8 Team Guyana USA 0

It is often difficult to predict how a team or teams will respond following heart-breaking losses. And so it was this afternoon when Team Jamaica USA met Team Guyana USA in the 2012 New York Caribbean Cup soccer championship third place game.

In last week’s semi-finals poor finishing perhaps deprived Team Jamaica a spot in the 2012 Caribbean Cup final, as they lost to Team St. Lucia USA 2-1 in sudden death PSO, while a sluggish Team Guyana was completely outplayed by Team Grenada.

It didn’t take long for Jamaica to show that there were no after effects from last week’s loss as they got into their free flowing passing game almost immediately. Goals from Romario Campbell (2), Damion Williams (2) and Denzil Watson saw Jamaica go into the half with a 5-0 advantage.

In the second stanza, Campbell and Williams completed a three goal afternoon with Garfield Gillespie getting the eighth to send Jamaica home with the third place trophy and an 8-0 win.

Sometimes it takes time to build a championship team but there ought to be some concern in the Guyana camp after failing to produce in the playoffs for the second consecutive year.
